High School 12-18 years

Adolescence is an age of searching for identity, community and justice. It is a time for students to engage in the wider community, realise the significance of their place and time and become the people they want to be. It is the goal of our secondary school programme to help students discover themselves. We continue to use the Montessori principles to support each individual through this critical transition. We work together as a community to plan and make decisions, discuss issues, resolve conflict and negotiate solutions. Leadership roles vary and individual strengths are valued.

At the same time, we balance the individual’s need for choice and self-directed inquiry with New Zealand Curriculum standards in planning and assessment.  Our students research, discuss, plan, create and present individual and collaborative projects. English, social science, physical science, maths and creative expression are employed for practical means: to craft a product or present a dramatic performance. Instruction is designed to inspire interest, cover fundamentals, and facilitate deeper learning.

Our adolescent class for 12 to 15 year olds is called Kawakawa (Year 8-10).
Our college programme for NCEA students aged 15 to 18 years is called Tāwari (Year 11-13).
