Practical Life: The Heart of Our Akomanga

Rewarewa Head Teacher – Preschool

If you have ever observed in our Preschool and noticed a child carefully pouring water from one jug to another, folding a cloth with great concentration, or sweeping up a small pile of crumbs with quiet determination, you have witnessed one of the most powerful areas of our Montessori environment – Practical Life.

To an adult eye, these activities can look simple. But in Montessori, Practical Life is anything but. It is the foundation upon which all other learning is built.

What is Practical Life?

Practical Life refers to the everyday tasks that mirror the real work of the world – dressing, cleaning, food preparation, and caring for our environment and one another. In our akomanga, these activities are carefully prepared and presented to tamariki in a way that invites independence, focus, and pride in their own abilities.

Practical Life activities have a real purpose and a real outcome. When a child sets the table for morning tea, that table truly gets set. When they water the plants, those plants are genuinely cared for. This sense of real contribution is meaningful for young children, who have an inner drive to participate in the life of their community.

Why Does it Matter?

The benefits of Practical Life extend far beyond the task itself. Through these activities, tamariki develop fine and gross motor skills, hand-eye coordination, and the muscular control that will later support writing and other complex tasks. They also build concentration – learning to stay with a task from beginning to end – as well as patience, perseverance, and the ability to problem-solve when something does not go to plan.

Perhaps most importantly, Practical Life nurtures a child’s sense of self. When tamariki discover they can cut a banana, button their own coat, or wash and dry a dish independently, something lights up in them. They stand a little taller. They are no longer waiting to be helped – they are capable, contributing members of our community.

The Connection to Whānau

The beauty of Practical Life is that it does not begin or end at kura. Every home is full of opportunities for tamariki to engage in meaningful work alongside their whānau. Inviting your tamariki to help with simple tasks – folding washing, wiping down a table – is not just helpful to you, it is deeply nourishing for them. They are not getting in the way; they are doing exactly what their developing minds and bodies need.

At school, we take great care to prepare our Practical Life activities so that every child can experience success. We slow down, we demonstrate with intention, and we step back to allow tamariki the time and space to do it themselves.

Because in Montessori, we believe that the hands are the instrument of the mind – and when we give children meaningful work, we give them the world.
