Byron Lynds – Board of Trustees Presiding Member
As I come to the end of my time as Presiding Member and step down from the Board at the end of Term 1, I want to take a moment to reflect on what has been a deeply rewarding journey.
I first joined the Board for a simple reason: to support my children and to give back to our school community in a way that was realistic for me as a working parent. Like many parents, my days were full, and the only time I could offer was outside of work hours. Governance felt like a meaningful way to contribute my skills.
The role of a school board is often unseen, but it is a vital part of how a school thrives. Governance is about setting direction, ensuring strong stewardship, and supporting the conditions in which our tamariki, kaiako, and wider community can flourish. It is about long-term thinking, careful decision-making, and holding the wellbeing and success of our children at the centre of everything we do. I think you would be surprised at the variety and complexity of issues that come to a school board.
What I have enjoyed most is the sense of shared purpose. Wā Ora is a school powered by people who care deeply; whānau, staff, and volunteers who give their time because they believe in making a difference for our children. Working alongside such a committed community has been a privilege. There is something truly special about contributing to a space where the impact of your effort is felt directly by tamariki, every single day.
I have also greatly valued the opportunity to work closely with the Senior Leadership Team, and with Ava in particular. The relationship between governance and leadership is a critical one, and it has always been a pleasure to engage in thoughtful and purposeful collaboration. The dedication, professionalism, and care shown by the leadership team continually reinforces how fortunate we are as a school community.
My decision to step down has not been an easy one. The role of Presiding Member carries an ongoing and increasing demand, and with significant work commitments in 2026, I know I would no longer be able to give the time and energy the role deserves. Stepping aside now allows space for fresh capacity and ensures the Board continues to function at its best.
I am confident the Board is in excellent hands. Our incoming Presiding Member, Stacey Newlands, is highly capable and brings with her three years of experience on the board. Her commitment to the school and understanding of governance will serve Wā Ora well.
Finally, I want to acknowledge and thank everyone who gives their time to this school: Board members past and present, staff, volunteers, and whānau. Your contribution matters more than you may realise, and it truly makes a difference in the lives of our tamariki. As they say, “If you want to go quickly, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.”
It has been an honour to serve this community. Thank you for the trust, the collaboration, and the shared commitment to our children.
