Children will need lunch and snacks (perhaps in a plastic bag to lessen the weight), a water bottle with water only, good walking shoes, appropriate clothing for the weather that can be removed and carried if needed, a backpack that is empty of any extraneous bits and bobs, that they can carry themselves, sunhat and sunscreen applied before they leave home.
